Driving Network Transformation: The Trends and Technologies behind IP Transformation of Fixed and Mobile Networks

Abstract:
What does "any service, anywhere, on any device" actually mean in a new telecom world of fiber-rich fixed networks and 3G/4G mobile ? This presentation will start with an overview of the service drivers and technology enablers that are pushing telcos to move toward "full-IP" and "flatter" networks, opening for a full breed of new services on mobile as well as fixed access. Fixed networks have a bit of a head start on this sort of transformation: Pierre will share some of the valuable lessons learned from wireline IP transformation, as well as the challenges and opportunities ahead, such as they need to be optimized for massive content delivery. The focus of his presentation will then be on the path to flatter, smarter mobile networks. What wireless access topology is needed? What are the drivers? The challenges and real-world considerations? And how does a mobile or converged operator plan the steps to accelerate the transformation to an All IP network?

Abstract:
The technology and the customers demands are evolving fast, so the network must face new challenges. An evolution of each network layer is needed.
More specifically: Networks should be designed to follow the broadband speed race increasing bandwidth year over year.The collaboration between fixed and mobile accesses should be increased o Mobile access can provide broadband fixed service for certain uses and environments o Femtocells will increase coverage of mobile networks. Distribution of contents, specially video, is more and more important. The ways of content distribution should be defined being more efficient and allowing to distribute other agents' contents. Network infrastructure must be convergent. The infrastructure must be ready for the integration of more intelligence and openness in the network to put in value the networks providing more services to the end users. Different levels will be included (customers profiling, storage, location, presence, ...).
In order to improve time to market for new services, network and IT must be much more coupled and a multiservice solution (SDP/IMS) implemented in advance. Telefónica customers' experience must be homogeneous regardless of the access and device used: network must be agnostic of the device and access. The home is the place where majority of telecom services are used so the role of Telefónica in the digital home is very important. Infrastructure must allow Telefónica to be position as a key player at home.
